Mosel Wine

The Mosel region is the oldest German winegrowing region and represents the largest region with steep vineyards in the world.

The vineyards seem to grow right out of the river. Often, the slopes are so steep that the vines can only be found on narrow terraces secured by slate stone walls. With inclines up to 65 percent, here are the steepest vineyards in Europe. On the extreme steep slopes, the Riesling vines cling to the barren stony soil. Without elaborate manual work, there would be nothing here. The Mosel region shows in its entirety an interesting wine country with a highly idiosyncratic profile. It exemplifies a wine style, which, perfected, produces magnificent, fruity, elegant Riesling wines with beguiling minerality and characteristic acidity.

Mosel Rieslings have a lot of stamina and present themselves after decades in bottle with an amazing freshness. Its lively character preserves them under the pressure of a full and complex fruit.

There is no uniform picture of Mosel Riesling. Depending on the place and soil type, Mosel Riesling shows different facets—more racy and finely fruity, sometimes bigger and more mineral in taste. The aroma can be of apple and pear, sometimes apricot and citrus fruits. Sometimes herbs dominate; other times, the aromas are floral, flowery notes. Also exotic fruit flavours of passion fruit, mango, figs, and fragrance compositions of honey and raisins can be found in Mosel Riesling. The long river course offers with its different climatic conditions all possibilities.

Exceptional wine estates and vineyards of the Mosel

Riesling wines from the Würzgarten in Ürzig are characterized by spicy fruit, fine acidity, and a clear structure and are definitely different from the light, fine, filigree, and spritzy Riesling wines from the Juffer in Brauneberg.

A deliberately modern, slender style, such as from Weingut Hain, which cultivates one of the most prestigious vineyards, the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, is very different from the expression of the mighty Rieslings of a Max Ferd. Richters.

Riesling wines, with their playful interaction between fruit and acid and their elegant minerality from the slate soils of steep slopes, are interpreted differently by the winemakers, but never compete with each other. They illustrate the inexhaustibility of this royal vine.

Where winegrowers have been cultivating vines for centuries, in almost unreal places, there is more to it than just “acquiring wine.” Absolute dedication and a never-ending passion for wine play a crucial and motivating role here, even at the time of Roman occupation more than 2000 years ago.
