Passion Riesling

Riesling is the passion at Weingut Peter Lauer. The winery in Ayl has some of the best steep slope sites on the Saar. In addition to the famous Ayler Kupp, Florian Lauer cultivates two other important vineyards on the Saar: the Saar “Feilser,” located directly above the river, and the very steep Schonfels, situated on a cliff a little further upstream. Florian Lauer has also recently planted and recultivated the forgotten Lambertskirch, just a stone’s throw away from Schonfels.

In some parcels, there are vines up to 100 years old. Weingut Peter Lauer is one of the most impressive Riesling producers on the Saar. The Rieslings have genuine character. Riesling plays here the sensory keyboard of soils, climate, and nature. At Peter Lauer, they harvest and vinify the Riesling from the best parcels separately. Some of which are fermented in the traditional Fuder cask.

Riesling for Advanced Learners

Since 2005, Florian Lauer is the 5th generation responsible for the production and vinification of Lauer Rieslings. In the vineyards, only organic fertilizers are used. These come from the cattle and horse stables of the village. Heavy machinery is not allowed in the vineyards, as it unnecessarily compacts the soil and thus impoverishes the habitat. The wines are fermented with natural yeasts. There is no fining or other aids in the cellar. Here, winemaking is still understood and lived as an honest craft.

Each wine may and should be allowed to bear all its natural edges and traits with pride. From the steep slate slopes grow great Riesling personalities. Sometimes unusual, but always with great stature! The Riesling wines, born from meager slate soils, are luminous comets in the wine sky of the Saar.
