Weingut Jos. Christoffel jr.
For 400 years, this winery in Ürzig has been in operation on the Middle Mosel. Today, the barely 2-ha wine estate is owned by Karl Josef Christoffel, better known as Kajo, and his sister-in-law Annekatrin Christoffel-Prüm.
The vineyards include plots in Erdener Treppchen, Ürziger Würzgarten, and Erdener Prälat. The parcels are planted exclusively with ungrafted, old vines, some of which are 100 years old. Kajo, born in 1932, works using traditional methods and his Riesling wines are fermented with ambient yeasts in oak Fuder casks. He refuses to do any fining or other manipulation of the musts. As one of the oldest active winemakers of the Mosel, he can draw on an inexhaustible wealth of experience and knows the following: “only what you give the wine, you get back from it.” A simple but very existential wisdom.
For decades, his fine fruity Rieslings enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide. Although the wines are closed in their youth, they develop excellently with time in bottle and count among the most complex elixirs of German Riesling. The export share is an impressive 80 percent. Only 20,000 bottles are produced every year!
