Generous reductive aromas and luscious yellow fruits come together on the palate with nuances of wild honey and dried apricots. Yet despite the intense ripeness, a refreshing acidity winds the fruit as tightly as a violin string before the Saturday evening concert, beautifully tuned with haunting grace notes of green herbs and candied lemons. Still far too young to reveal the full charms, this “small Auslese” nonetheless hints at the slate elegance of the Altenberg vineyard both now, and for many, many years to come. Food: Fruit and spice offer a beautiful harmony with this nuanced, late harvest Riesling. Try strawberries with aged balsamico; poached pears with cinnamon and cloves; perhaps the eye-watering tang of a tarte-au-citron, or the elegant simplicity of an orange marmalade souffle.

The Saar is the largest tributary of the Mosel. The winegrowing area extends from Serrig to the mouth of the Saar River at Konz, as the crow flies about twelve kilometers upstream. The acreage of the Saar region is rather small with about 750 hectares. Nevertheless, there are numerous excellent vineyards, some on steep slopes.More wines from the region
