The Giant Riesling

The south- to southeast-facing slope and proximity to the Saar makes for a favorable microclimate. The slate soil stores the heat of the day which is released to the vines at night. As a result, the vines are exposed to only slight temperature fluctuations and can mature optimally over the course of the year.

Due to the very good drainage properties of the moderately weathered slate, erosion does not occur even after massive rainfall. The vines grow deep into the ground, which protects them from heat and drought stress. The Altenberg is planted exclusively to Riesling and is one of the top sites of the region.

Riesling wines from Kanzemer Altenberg are rather austere and closed in their youth. After a few years of bottle maturity, they show the spicy scent of the hillside on a hot summer day. The brilliant world-class Riesling wines from Kanzemer Altenberg have a pronounced salinity and slate aroma. They are rich wines with nuance and plenty of minerality.
