The Heart of Rock

The German term “Lei” (also spelled Ley or Lay) means slate but also crag. With its five terraces that climb up the steep slope, Herzlei has always been one of the best vineyards and the core section of the historic Erdener Treppchen. The place name Herzlei is a mere 0.5 ha within the vast vineyards of Erden.

The up to 100 year old Riesling vines are ungrafted and grow on a stony gray slate soil that gives wines with great finesse. Dr. Hermann has sole ownership of Erdener Herzlei. The Spätlese with the gold capsule from the ancient vines in Herzlei is one of the best wines at the estate.
